An interview with Mr. Wang Chen-hua(Senior Engineer)

TSMC is the world’s largest providers of IC foundry services, and the largest specialist semiconductor manufacturer. TSMC has issued depository receipts in the US, and has established advanced 12-inch fabrication plants.

Mr. Wang Chen-hua had previously worked at Sun Microsystems and Micron Technology in the US. His main incentive for giving up stable employment in the US to return to Taiwan was the rapid growth of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry; Mr. Wang felt that the industry had considerable potential for further development.

Having learned from the Chinese American Semiconductor Professional Association that TSMC was actively recruiting overseas talent, Mr. Wang began to investigate the possibilities at TSMC. Having already been aware that TSMC enjoyed a high reputation within the global semiconductor industry, he discovered that the company was now at the cutting edge of developments in its field, and that its scale of operations now surpassed that of US companies in the same industry. TSMC also appeared to have the right ideas about technology, production equipment and personnel management. In early 2006, Mr. Wang traveled back to Taiwan to take up a position at TSMC.

Mr. Wang is involved in active memory design; he works in a team of 10. He is the only personnel recruited from overseas to be working on active memory technology development at TSMC. Active memory is a new field both for TSMC and for the Taiwanese semiconductor industry as a whole, and TSMC is continuing to expand the size of its active memory R&D team. Mr. Wang hopes to have the opportunity to move into a managerial position in the future.

Having been living in the US for over 10 years, what impressed Mr. Wang most on returning to Taiwan was how much progress there has been in Taiwan in the last few years, and how full of energy and vigor the country appears to be. Today, Taiwan has first-rate infrastructure, and offers a comfortable, convenient lifestyle. With bilingual education systems having been in place for several years now, the children of overseas talent that have come to work in Taiwan find it reasonably easy to adjust to Taiwanese schools. Mr. Wang is full of praise for the government’s overseas talent recruitment policy.
