One of the newest faces at Davicom, Bob Cheng began his career with the company only in recent months. Bob works as an associate in business strategy and development, facilitating in the pursuit and analysis of new opportunities for the company, as well as assisting in examining current and future prospects particularly in finance, sales and marketing.
A Taiwan citizen by birth, Bob moved to the US with his family at age 3, until graduating recently with an MBA in Strategy from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Seeing a slow recovery in the US economy due to the global economic recession, Bob decided to come to Asia where Taiwan was his foremost choice.
In addition to having existing connections in Taiwan, both personally and socially, Bob saw potential growth and opportunities on the island which can enhance his professional career and learning experience. Moreover, with Taiwan's proximity and close interaction with China, Bob takes this as a springboard to other Asian countries and an important element in building his network to expand his connections. “I had opportunities in the US, but none offered the future possibility of Asian growth and expansion that living in Taiwan could present,” stated Bob. Being also interested in Asian culture and history, from both a professional and personal perspective therefore, the opportunity and circumstances seemed right for Bob to take the leap into a new environment and look forward to fresh new experiences.
Although coming back to Taiwan enabled Bob to reconnect with his culture and heritage, Bob still considers Taiwan to be a new environment where local practices and customs are fairly unfamiliar to him. As an overseas Taiwanese from the US, Bob deems it necessary to develop his Chinese skills particularly in reading and writing, and therefore has been diligent in his study since he arrived in June.
Bob enjoys his life as an expat as he continues to meet new people and learns interesting things every day. Living in Taiwan for several months now, Bob finds Taiwan quite westernized and enjoys the many conveniences that the country offers including the domestic public transportation system which is so prevalent on the island.
In the face of difficulties, however, Bob keeps an open mind and flexible approach, and believes that a little time and patience is all that is needed to cope with such situations. Because Taiwanese are kind and helpful by nature, to survive in Taiwan's non-English speaking environment is not tough at all. “I find that a friendly smile and the willingness to ask for help could get me through most situations,” remarked Bob.
Being a part of Davicom has not only given Bob the unique opportunity of gaining an understanding and an introduction to the Asian business environment, but it has also helped build his network and enhanced his work experience, enabling him to increase his knowledge and grow professionally. Bob takes even the simplest interaction with colleagues a significant occasion that can offer him valuable insight into how people think, work, and collaborate here in Asia.
Bob's pleasant, humble and sunny disposition enables him to see and accept things with optimism. He knows full well that the salary scale and living standards in the US are higher than in Asia, yet he has chosen to leave the comfort of his own home to come to Taiwan because he has seen certain benefits that are absent in the US such as lower living costs and inexpensive medical and healthcare system, in addition to more opportunities of professional growth and career promotion.
Bob's optimistic outlook has not only rewarded him with a positive experience in Taiwan. It has allowed him to see that a promising future awaits those whose confidence and aspiration is toward Asia. It is for those who are willing to take the leap across the Pacific and spend their professional career in the world's largest and most populous continent.
